Choice of Seven Intensive Workshops
There are seven Pre-Event Intensive Workshops:
Blues Guitar
Taught by Scott Ainslie.
Designed for all levels.
We'll work on solo acoustic blues guitar techniques in the styles of Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, Robert Johnson, and others. In the first half of the workshop, we'll look at right and left hand techniques, hybrid chord forms and working in standard, dropped-D, and open tunings. The remainder of the workshop will focus on slide techniques and repertoire. Please bring a slide that fits securely on your little finger. For advice on choosing a slide, please refer to http://CattailMusic.com/ForGuitarPlayers/choosing-a-slide.htm.
Fiddle
Taught by Lissa Schneckenburger.
Designed for advanced beginner to intermediate.
In this intensive we will look at the physical reality of playing the violin, and what things we can do to be more comfortable and make a better sound each time we pick up our instrument. We'll talk about posture and bow hold, right arm and left hand techniques, bowing patterns, and more. Participants are encouraged to come with their own specific technique questions. There will be no written music, so please bring a recording device and notebook.
Mountain Dulcimer
Taught by Aubrey Atwater
& Elwood Donnelly.
Designed for all levels.
The many possibilities of the mountain dulcimer are part of the beauty of this extraordinary Appalachian instrument. Moving at a comfortable pace, the dulcimer will be approached from a variety of angles: singing and playing chords, tunings, using the traditional noter, strumming, fingerpicking, flatpicking, and any other topics that may "happen" as a result of group chemistry and as time allows. Participants will leave the class amazed with themselves and full of new ideas. Aubrey and Elwood will be co-teaching this class and may divide into two levels if necessary.
Mandolin
Taught by Henry Koretzky.
Designed for all levels beyond beginner.
We will survey all things mando: picking and fretting techniques, tremolo, chords, double-stops, rhythm, styles, and history. Problem-solving geared to workshop attendees' individual challenges will be a big part of this. Come with questions, problems, and aspirations.
Songwriting
Taught by The Stray Birds.
Designed for all levels.
Immerse yourself in the art of songwriting! This workshop will explore lyric and melody writing, as well as ideas that will help the creative process. We will look at a wide variety of skills, tools, and strategies that will enhance your songwriting.
Harmony Singing
Taught by The Barefoot Movement.
Designed for all levels.
We'll work on singing harmony in an old-time style, looking at blend, techniques, how to find the right notes, and a little music theory. You'll come away with an understanding of how harmonies are made and some strategies for finding harmonies on the fly.
Folk Music Skills
Taught by Simple Gifts.
Designed for advanced beginner.
We'll work on basic skills that will help you get more out of the weekend, particularly focusing on how to jam, how to learn by ear, basics of arranging music, and tips for playing well with other musicians.
