MASTER CLASSES
Get a head start to the weekend in any of the special master classes that are held just before the start of Folk College.
These sessions require a separate registration and fee.
Class size is limited, so reserve your spot early!
2015 Master Classes Schedule
Registration for the Master Classes begins at 9 am on Friday, May 22.
All classes begin at 10 am and go to 1 pm, and includes lunch (immediately following the intensive workshop).

Fiddle Technique
Taught by Laurie Hart.
Designed for intermediate/advanced levels.
We'll look at rhythmic swing, bow patterns, bowed and fingered ornaments, droning and musicality while learning a Cape Breton reel, an Irish jig and a Swedish waltz. We'll work by ear with sheet music to be provided after the workshop.
Blues Guitar
Taught by Eleanor Ellis.
Designed for intermediate/advanced levels.
In this intensive 3-hour class, Eleanor Ellis will share many tips and tricks for playing blues guitar. We'll look at fingerstyle acoustic blues and chording up the neck, as well as tricks, transitions, and turnarounds to make your music flow.
Folk Cello
Taught by Natalie Haas.
Designed for intermediate/advanced levels.
Natalie Haas is highly regarded as a pioneer in folk cello, creating new paths and roles for the instrument. This will be three hours of intensive work on playing folk music on the cello.
Ukulele
Taught by Jamie O'Brien.
Designed for intermediate/advanced levels.
We'll look at all things ukulele including chord shapes in basic and more advanced voicings, scales, strumming, and picking patterns. You'll learn how to get a Hawaiian sound and we'll play songs to bring it all together.
Mountain Dulcimer
Taught by Jeff Berman.
Designed for intermediate/advanced levels.
The many possibilities of the mountain dulcimer are part of the beauty of this extraordinary Appalachian instrument. We'll look at right and left hand techniques that will allow your playing to have a better flow and bring more variation of expression into your musical vocabulary. We'll especially look at rhythm, exploring different approaches to phrasing, timing, articulation, and expression, working toward a solid and confident rhythmic concept in your playing.
Songwriting
Taught by Joel Mabus.
Designed for all levels.
Immerse yourself in the art of songwriting with an award-winning singer-songwriter! This workshop will explore lyric and melody writing, as well as ideas that will help the creative process. We will look at a wide variety of skills, tools, and strategies that will enhance your songwriting.
Folk Music Skills
Taught by The Barefoot Movement.
Designed for all instruments, advanced beginner.
In this special workshop designed for advanced beginners, we'll address skills that will help you get more out of the weekend. We'll particularly look at how to learn tunes by ear, how to jam, how to play backup, how to play melody, and how to play well with other musicians.

The cost for the Master Classes is $65, and includes lunch immediately following.
